Alleviation of Poverty

Our aim is to combat poverty and negligence. Again, statistics show that the population of Sub-Saharan Africa is nearly 935.28 million and 47% live on below or less than $1.25 a day. Even though there are reports of growth, generally it has not yet reached and impacted those in dire need. They are still vulnerable to hunger and price fluctuations of basic goods. The poverty level in these areas continues to create “harmful economic systems, conflicts, environmental factors such as drought and climate change, and population growth.” This leads to instability, violence, and massive displacement. The World Bank states that poverty rates are 20% higher in countries affected by violence in the last three decades. In fact, the poverty rate seems to be three times higher in African cities due to “the deplorable state of rural infrastructure, limited rural opportunities, high youth unemployment and limited access to quality education.” The report further states that “low levels of productivity trap millions of farmers in poverty, act as a brake on growth, and weaken links between the farm and non-farm economy.” This has taken a greater toll on women because they tend to be undervalued and earn lower wages under poor working conditions.  With our partners, we intend to mobilize women and support their entrepreneurship in creating local agricultural products to enhance economic sustainability.
