Migration and Development
In this area, we will work with the African Diaspora, both locally and internationally, to create a network that provides the African continent with the skills, volunteering, support, investment and funds to improve human rights through advocacy campaigns and awareness. It has been forecasted that migration is likely to increase to 405 million in 2050, up from 232 million. Migration is gradually becoming front and center as an agent of poverty reduction, sustainable development, and investment. In fact, in 2013, nearly $414 billion was remitted to different countries. For this reason, there is a dire need to tap into this potential in order to undertake international development. Migrants have developed skills and used them to create businesses and projects in their various countries of origin. The technology and skills acquired through their professions and successful businesses abroad have brought improvements to their respective communities. Yet there is a need to safeguard and protect migrants throughout the migration process as an investment geared towards development. We say “no” to abusive practices connected with migration such as human trafficking. Treatment during transit and in the destination country all must be addressed. The organization has thus far gathered members of the African Diaspora in the United States through meetings, forums, and roundtable discussions to engage them with our vision. We hope to identify and document African champions to create role models for others to emulate. We also hope to support African Diaspora groups to facilitate the channeling of resources, enhance investment, draw on expertise, take advantage of funds and, at the same time, address migration practices.
