In 2015, Flora Mwikali Kanyole started a rescue centre for girls who are survivors of sexual abuse, including sex trafficking and transactional sex.She used her rent money to take 11 girls to school,most of them being their first time in school. Currently, she cares for 40 girls by providing basic needs, including but not limited to schooling, counseling,medication and spiritual care.

Being a rape survivor herself, the tough healing process drew her to the plight of young girls who were victims and could not comprehend what abuse was being done unto them.

Her faith in God plays a central part in her work.

She currently relies on well wishers, church groups and organized groups of friends to meet the needs of the centre and supplements that with the income she gets from speaking and teaching engagements outside the centre.

With the perpetrators of their sexual abuse being family members or in their community, these girls cannot go back home yet till they are empowered enough to take on life on their own. The New Scent Centre is thus their home and Flora their Mother. – Flora Mwikali Kanyole
